New research indicates that individuals who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users buying such medications must be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a return to starting mass in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Therapies
The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually experience a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the jabs explains the accelerated regain.
These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Disease?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Experiences
People who have come off the jabs describe a sudden return of cravings.
"I experienced a switch flipping and I was suddenly starving," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is worsened if users have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers caution that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss relies on integrated lifestyle changes.
